Wake up to a wild brunch this Sunday

West Virginia is known for our home cooking and hospitality, and come Sunday, it’s time for a big, hearty, social.

It may be quite tempting to sleep in on the weekends. But then you’d miss the most unique meal of the week! (Well, ok— we keep it open a little later so even you late risers don’t miss out.)

These brunches are totally worth getting out of bed for:

1. Vandal’s Kitchen

Fayetteville

Although they just opened in the summer, Vandal’s Kitchen is already collecting culinary notoriety. They were voted Best Breakfast by Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine— and for good reason.

The apple bacon waffles here may just explode your taste buds. Other standouts include the Tennessee Colonel sandwich– fresh braised kale, country ham, house-made pimento cheese, fried egg, sharp cheddar and red onions. It’s so good, you’ll want to salute it.

Cozy and casual, Vandal’s is in an intricately designed restored home. Tables are dressed with fresh flowers, and the walls are dotted with a nice selection of local art, which you can purchase.

2. Black Sheep Burrito and Brews

Huntington & Charleston

Aptly named, Black Sheep Burrito and Brews isn’t into a ho-hum brunch scene. Forget your standard eggs benedict. Here you’ll want to opt for the Smoked Duck Benedict with smoked hoisin duck hash, fried bacon and 2 poached eggs over an English muffin. The Bombay Curry Benedict is another tasty twist on a brunch favorite. It’s a vindaloo curry eggs benedict topped with grilled chicken, cured ham and 2 fried eggs.

They also boast a diverse selection of burritos (hence the name), wings and tacos. You won’t run out of signature cocktails to sample, either. Skip the Mimosa and go for the Lavender Citrus Sangria. It’s made with lavender-scented Chardonnay, orange liqueur, orange juice, lemon-lime juices and topped with fresh citrus fruits and ginger ale.

3. Wedge Restaurant

Lavalette

Located on Lavalette Country Club’s Silo Golf Course, Wedge offers rustic and hearty dishes you won’t find on other brunch menus.

For example, go for the Crab Cake Eggs Benedict. Corn muffins are topped with crab cakes, poached eggs and Old Bay-infused hollandaise sauce.

You can also savor a unique twist on biscuits and gravy. Their fluffy buttermilk biscuits are topped with wood-fire-roasted duck gravy and golden scrambled eggs.

In addition to the varied brunch options, they offer a healthy selection of West Virginia craft beers. They rotate the taps often, so you can try something new each visit.

4. Cathedral Café

Fayetteville

Housed in a beautiful old church on Court Street, the atmosphere is rivaled only by the menu– especially the coffee.

Meat lovers will swoon over the Carnivore Frittata: eggs filled with spicy chorizo sausage, pecan-smoked bacon, smoked ham, onions, peppers and topped with cheddar jack cheese.

They also accommodate plant lovers with options like the Tofu Scramble. It’s a chili-powder-seared tofu with potatoes, peppers, onions, mushrooms, spinach and served with salsa. You don’t have to be vegan to love this dish, either.

Peruse one of the hundreds of books that flank the walls while you sip your organic chai. There’s also a nice display of local art and handmade items.

5. Blue-White Grill

Martinsburg

For more than 30 years, locals and tourists have poured into Blue-White Grill for breakfast. Lucky for late risers, they serve it all day.

Their 50s style décor beckons a simpler time. You can opt for a meal at the counter or in one of the vinyl booths.

A thriving breakfast crowd is testament to their menu. Standard diner selections like eggs, home fries and scrapple are done extremely well. Or, you can live on the edge and order the Oreo-laced pancakes or sip a peanut butter milkshake.

Whether you’re a Martinsburg native or an out-of-towner, you’ll feel like family. Friendly staff like to chat and throw out the occasional kind “Hon.” It’s like coming home.

6. Table 9

Morgantown

The blackboard reveals a satisfying surprise every week at Morgantown’s chic and fine Table 9. You may get lucky enough to catch a flavor mashup as divine as the peanut butter chocolate waffles with bacon. It’s sweet, indulgent bliss.

Of course, the Sunday staples aren’t too shabby, either! If you’ve never heard of Devils on Horseback, you’re in for a treat— made even more indulgent with Appalachian pepper jam, a perfect precursor to another recreated classic, biscuits ‘n gravy.

Each dish is plated like an artwork. Pair it with a handcrafted cocktail for a bright, envy-worthy Instagram shot.

7. Vintage Restaurant and Wine Bar

Elkins

Vintage’s menu changes with the season, but it’s always fresh, with an old-fashioned charm.

Take your taste buds to old times with Vintage’s Southern-style staples, like country meatloaf or a full Mountaineer meal. Or maybe savor something a little more contemporary, like omelettes or their signature wood-fired pizza.

Enjoy your selection in the themed semi-private ‘pods’ or curl up by the fireside lounge.
