West Virginia Wineries

Discover West Virginia’s best vineyards, where innovative vintners have redrafted traditional farming to create competitive, world-class flavors. And others went a different route, using the natural flavors of the Appalachian forest to bypass grapes altogether.

Where to Taste & Tour

Daniel Vineyards, founded in 1990, is a family-owned and operated conservation grape farm and estate winery nestled in the stunning Appalachian mountains of southern West Virginia. Formerly a golf course, the 192-acre property boasts 30 acres of perfectly manicured West Virginia-grown grapes. Located at an elevation ranging from 2,500 to 2,600 feet above sea level, Daniel Vineyards is the highest vineyard in the state of West Virginia.

Enjoy a taste of their blackberry dessert wine, perfect on a hot summer day. Or take a self-guided tour of the vineyards and get a close up look at the 15 grape varieties known as Cold Climate Cultivars, which are used to make Daniel Vineyards’ delicious wines.

With a full range of wines for you to choose from, Lambert’s Vintage Winery in Weston has the right bottle to fall in love with.  The gorgeous winery is constructed from hand-cut stones gathered from various areas of the state. While you’re there, take a tour to see how they produce their wine. Sample their fine wines outside on the gorgeous property or by the fireplace in the tasting room.

Located in the rural valley in the heart of the state, Kirkwood Winery in Summersville invites you to “enjoy a taste of the mountains” when you stop by for a tasting or a tour. While you’re there, try the winery’s savory wines made for cooking like Appalachian Ramp or Dandelion

Where to Buy

If you find yourself in the capital city of Charleston, this next one is a must for any wine connoisseur. The Wine & Cheese Shop is one of the original merchants when Capitol Market first opened in 1997. With over 1200 square feet of wall to wall wine space you can easily find what you’re looking for. Need help deciding? The friendly folks are knowledgable and can help with your selection, taking the mystery out of wine buying.

Building a charcuterie board to pair with your wine? Good Mansion Wines is a fine wine shop and bakery in Wheeling. You’ll certainly find something to enjoy with the area’s largest selection of wines and over 100 imported cheeses and salumi to choose from. Be sure to pick up one of their freshly-baked French desserts and pastries made by the resident patissier from Paris.
