Wild, Wonderful West Virginia Encourages Outdoor Enthusiasts to Share Experiences from this Year’s 22 Days of Gauley Season

CHARLESTON, West Virginia (September 11, 2015) – Wild, Wonderful West Virginia encourages rafters, kayakers, guides and outdoor enthusiasts to share photos, videos and stories from this year’s 22 days of Gauley Season–which begins today, September 11, 2015–with #GauleySeason.  Although West Virginia offers seasonally driven, year-round whitewater rafting, Gauley Season is known for its especially challenging rapids and narrow window of opportunity which draw more than 40,000 rafters from around the world to experience the “Beast of the East.”

“Whether you’re a veteran of the rapids or just dipping your toes into the world of rafting, Gauley Season offer both heart-pounding adventure and new thrills with every trip down the river,” said Tourism Commissioner Amy Shuler Goodwin. “Taking on the Gauley is more than a river trip–it’s an experience. Share your photos, videos and stories with #GauleySeason.”

The first release of water from the dam at Summersville Lake, coordinated  by the Army Corps of Engineers, will create more than 100 rapids along 25 miles of the Gauley River–with 60+ of these being Class III to V+ rapids.  The season continues with five weeks of four-day releases, culminating with a two-day release which starts on Bridge Day, October 17.
