Meet the Roaming Gnome here in the mountains!
Travelocity’s Roaming Gnome is touring West Virginia!
Have you seen a tiny bearded fellow in town? From late April to early May, the globetrotting gnome will be exploring local towns and attractions.
Wondering where you can catch him? He doesn’t have precise times (magical creatures can be crafty), but here’s his schedule:
Thomas and Davis, April 27
Blackwater Falls and Dolly Sods are on the top of his list, since he loves rugged landscapes. Blackwater boasts a stunning amber waterfall. Dolly Sods treats you to views like you’d find in Canada— stunted trees, peat bogs and jagged boulders. No wonder the gnome is curious!
Try finding him at local watering holes, too, like TipTop, a cozy coffeehouse and bar that makes crafted espresso drinks, scrumptious treats and adult beverages.
You might catch him having a beer at Stumptown Ales, too; he loves craft brews. Raise a glass of their brews, which pack a heavy punch of tropical citra hops. Don’t forget to grab a savory small plate, too!
Lewisburg, April 28
The Roaming Gnome told us a while ago he was looking forward to the Salt Cave and Spa. For one thing, the low illumination and stone decor remind him of home. For another, he wants a facial and a beard comb.
You’ll also find him strolling along the Greenbrier Rail Trail, the scenic path that winds along the Greenbrier River.
It’s a good bet the gnome will relax at The Greenbrier, one of West Virginia’s most luxurious resorts. Enjoy acres of emerald-green golf links, lavish lounges, a famous mineral spa and elegant gardens.
Later, he hopes to wet his whistle at The Livery Tavern. This historic restaurant has savory, sophisticated dishes and pages of wine selections. He’ll top it off with a bottle of quality Appalachian whiskey, bourbon, vodka or gin from Smooth Ambler Spirits!
Fayetteville, April 29
The Roaming Gnome gets to pull into America’s Coolest Small Town! He’s heard all about the New River Gorge Bridge, which breaks all kinds of records. For example, did you know it’s the longest steel-arch span in the Western Hemisphere? Catch up with him by the Overlook.
It never hurts to get inspired before trying a new sport! The gnome will be checking out all the season’s most stylish gear at Water Stone Outdoors. Nab some quality adventure clothes and gadgets for yourself or the family dog. Then run over to Fayette Station Rapid to whitewater raft with our guest!
After riding the wild waves, he’ll grab some caffeine and other pick-me-ups at The Grove and Vandal’s Kitchen.
Do you think the Mystery Hole will stump the gnome? Boggle your mind at this bizarre shack, where gravity does funky things!
Parkersburg, May 2
This experienced traveler knows all about luxury, so you might see him sipping an espresso or devouring lunch at Spats at the Blennerhassett Hotel. Do you think he’ll spot a ghost? There’s a lot of history in those walls! Don’t be surprised if he boards the sternwheeler and toodles around Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park, either.
Going for a drink at North End Tavern? Maybe you’ll be lucky and spot our friend! Try their award-winning amber ale or sample some tasty appetizers and sandwiches.
Finish up at the the Mothman statue, a local curiosity commemorating a monster from the 1960s. Was it real?
Wheeling, May 3
The gnome’s last day in West Virginia is packed! He’ll golf at Oglebay‘s championship courses and practice range. Then, join him at Coleman’s Fish Market. You’ll love their delicious— and famous— fish sandwich and seasoned fries!
How about a trip to the Oglebay Zoo? See your favorite animals; maybe you’ll spot the gnome, too! Do you think he’s ever seen a ring-tailed lemur? One thing’s for sure— the lemur has never seen a gnome!
For a creepy trip, head to Moundsville Penitentiary, a former prison. The gothic-style building is supposedly haunted!
