These 5 West Virginia ‘cupcakeries’ will satisfy your sweet tooth

Cupcakes. Cupcakes are everywhere! This latest foodie trend was born out of convenience — unlike a cake, you don’t have to slice and plate individual servings. That, and well, cupcakes are just plain delicious, especially when you consider all the gourmet flavors they come in. This sweet treat is even celebrated annually at the West Virginia Cupcake Festival. If you can’t wait ‘til then, here are a few places in the Mountain State where you can get your cupcake fix.

(Many of these shops also offer gluten-free, sugar-free or vegan options, so call or check their websites for more information about dietary options.)

1. Lil Bit of Heaven Cupcakes

Opening Lil Bit of Heaven Cupcakes was a lifelong dream for a woman who has fond memories of helping her mother in the kitchen when she was a little girl. And now, she runs her own bakery with her husband. The St. Albans shop offers more than two-dozen varieties of sweet, dreamy concoctions, like Cass’ Banana Puddin,’ named for the banana pudding made by the owners’ daughter-in-law. This cupcake has a vanilla wafer bottom beneath moist banana cake that’s filled with fresh vanilla custard, topped with vanilla buttercream and a vanilla wafer garnish.

2. Rock City Cake Company

The hard part about ordering cupcakes from Rock City Cake Company is trying to pick a flavor. In addition to the standard chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, this Charleston bakery makes over 80 (yes, 80) flavors of gourmet cupcakes, including seasonal flavors. You’ll find everything from Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough to Blueberry Cheesecake on the menu. If you’re not sure what to order, try one of the best-sellers, like the Wooten, made of white cake with a fudge-filled center, topped with buttercream icing and drizzled with fudge.

3. The Cupcakerie

Step into The Cupcakerie in Morgantown and you might feel like you’re at a fashion show where flavor varieties are arranged into nine colorful “collections.” You’re not in Milan or Paris though — you’re in Mountaineer Country! So, how about sampling the Mountaineer Collection, with its West Virginia-inspired flavors, like Take Me Home Rocky Roads — a blend of chocolate mousse cake topped with chocolate buttercream and topped with a sprinkling of chocolate chips, marshmallows, pecans and walnuts. Now that’s a runway walk worth taking!

4. My Little Cupcake

My Little Cupcake began as a modest offering at Bridgeport Farmers Market, but the business took off quickly, enabling the husband-and-wife team to expand their shop to a storefront in Clarksburg. Choose from more than 40 flavors, including the crowd favorite, Butterscotch-Dipped, a classic vanilla cake topped with vanilla buttercream dipped in rich butterscotch ganache.

What goes well with a fresh-baked cupcake? How about a steaming hot cup of coffee? You can get both at Latte Da Cupcakery in Martinsburg, which uses locally roasted Black Dog Coffee in all its coffee drinks. The daily menu features half a dozen decadent cupcake varieties, including Orange Dreamsicle and Caramel Macchiato. But you don’t want to miss the different featured flavor every month, or you’ll miss out on scrumptious treats like PB&J — a vanilla cupcake filled with strawberry jelly and topped with creamy whipped peanut butter frosting.

Which cupcake is at the top of your list?
