Mountain Biking

Mountain biking in the Mountain State is a perfect fit. West Virginia is the only state completely covered in the Appalachian Mountain Range. This unique topography has carved out miles of trails that allow you to bike almost anywhere in the state. Over the years, word about West Virginia’s high-quality trails has gotten out, and the state has become an international mountain biking destination.

Arrowhead Bike Trails

Enjoy West Virginia’s new National Park and Preserve. The New River Gorge might be known for its whitewater or climbing but don’t count out mountain biking. The Arrowhead Bike Trails are located less than 4 miles from downtown Fayetteville. Enjoy this International Mountain Bicycling Association built trail system. The stacked loop network has something from beginners to more experienced riders.

Tip: If you want to check out the latest in mountain bike gear, you can rent it at the nearby Arrowhead Bike Farm.

Mountwood Park

Located in the Mid-Ohio Valley, Mountwood Park has over 20 miles of well-maintained exciting, and scenic single-track trails. Snowshoe Mountain Resort

Home to the 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023 UCI World Cup, Snowshoe Mountain Resort is a mountain biker’s dream. Snowshoe’s bike park is home to nearly 40 trails and 1,500 feet of vertical drop, which add up to challenging rides that caught the attention of Bike Magazine. Kanawha State Forest

Located less than ten miles from the state capital of Charleston. Kanawha State Forest offers over 30 miles of varied trails for all skill levels. Start off easy by exploring any of the forest service roads. For those looking to test their skills try the Black Bear Mountain trail, a highly popular single-track ride. After a long day of riding refuel at one of the many restaurants that Charleston has to offer.

How to Start Mountain Biking

One of the best ways to start mountain biking is to locate a gear shop in the part of Almost Heaven you want to go. Some gear shops offer rental bikes if you are a first-time rider. They will be able to point you to the beginner trails for you to explore. If you are a seasoned rider, still stop by the local gear shop to get the inside scoop on hidden trails, must-see landmarks, and places to eat after your adventurous day.

What to Bring

Your gear list is always going to vary on the weather, time of year, and biking destination.
