8 quaint country mountain inns

Cozy into a mountain escape in quaint, one-of-a-kind inns throughout West Virginia.

Here are just a few of the charming, locally owned inns you can discover on your travels in Wild, Wonderful West Virginia.

1. The Inn at Lost River

Escape to the quiet respite of The Inn at Lost River in Hardy County– just 2 hours from the Washington D.C. metro area. The restored 1870s farmhouse reflects a casual country elegance amidst the beautiful Shenandoah Mountains. Take your pick of any of the 3 guest rooms in the main house, or 2 private cottages.

Stop into the full-service gourmet café and shop next door for unique West Virginia handcrafted gifts, wines and craft beers. The Lost River General Store is a restored 1900-era former post office.

2. Barn With Inn

The Barn With Inn comes by its name honestly: It is set on a working farm in the rolling hills of Wellsburg. The innkeepers describe it as rural elegance, with a focus on mindful farming and farm-to-table foods.

The property includes seasonal vegetable, flower and butterfly gardens, and productive pastures and hay fields. Settle into a room in the main house or a restored hay loft or stable, then enjoy the fishing pond, in-ground swimming pool and 2 outdoor showers.

3. The Trainmaster’s House

The 1907 Victorian Trainmaster’s House bed & breakfast is decorated with railroad artifacts and other antiques, including a country depot agent’s telegraph office that was featured on “Antiques Road Show.” Room themes include “We Are… Marshall” and “Mister Carter’s Room,” named for the N&W locomotive engineer who once boarded there.

The house in Kenova, near where the Norfolk & Western/Norfolk & Southern main line crosses over the Chesapeake & Ohio/CSX line. It’s within walking distance of an old-fashioned soda fountain and the town square gazebo, where you can catch a concert.

4. Gobblers Ridge Lodge

Gobblers Ridge Lodge in Gilmer County is ideal for nature and wildlife lovers. The picturesque log house sits on side of a mountain among towering oak, hickory, poplar and dogwood trees, where whitetail deer, fox, turkey, squirrel and birds roam.

Relax for hours on an assortment of chairs, benches and swings on more than 2,500 square feet of porches and decks. The property includes several hiking trails and 2 small caves that guests are welcome to explore, and a gift shop showcases handcrafted items by local artisans.

5. The View

The View lives up to its name with a picturesque vista of Athens Lake and the surrounding valley from its back patio and deck. The newly remodeled bed & breakfast reflects a blend of modern and classic design, sitting on 7 acres of land. It’s just minutes from Pipestem Resort State Park, Winterplace ski resort and Concord University in Athens.

6. Log House Homestead

The Log House Homestead bed & breakfast in Cairo is built and furnished to resemble a house that would have belonged to an established tradesman in the early 1800s, but its amenities are all 21st century. Its location– down a quiet country lane, surrounded by wooded hills– offers peaceful respite for nature lovers. The homestead is only a quarter-mile from the North Bend Rail Trail, ideal for hiking, biking and horseback riding.

7. Elkhorn Inn

The Elkhorn Inn was built in 1922 as a miner’s clubhouse for Empire Coal and Coke Company. The inn, located on the Coal Heritage Trail in McDowell County, is a favorite among rail fans, fishermen and ATV riders.

Watch trains pass from the inn’s balcony, fish for trout on Elkhorn Creek, or take a ride on the Hatfield-McCoy Trails. Reserve a seat to indulge in the fine dining, or explore the Museum Room, which is filled with artifacts from the area’s railroading and coal mining history. Bonus: the inn is pet friendly.

8. Angel Band Farm

The 22-acre Angel Band Farm near Fairmont was once part of a much larger tract and a 19th century working farmstead. Today the circa 1850 farmhouse remains pretty much the same.

Several guest rooms have scenic views of the Tygart River. Enjoy cocktail hour on the front porch or take a stroll on several miles of peaceful country roads. The bed and breakfast is open seasonally, and pets are welcome, too.
