11 things You don’t want to miss at the State Fair of WV

The 10 most fun days of summer are nearing: the State Fair of West Virginia in Lewisburg begins Aug. 9 2019!

Every year, the State Fair offers a variety of events, rides and attractions, and there’s always something new and fun for everyone to enjoy.

From the amazing fair foods to the livestock, the rides and the stellar performances, we’ve compiled a list of things you don’t want to miss at this year’s State Fair:

1. The Big Wheel

It’s fondly called “The Dutch,” and you can see the big Ferris Wheel as soon as you enter the fairgrounds. A ride on The Dutch is the best way to see everything at the fair. For added excitement, ride it at night when you can overlook the entire lit-up fairground.

2. Twilight Harness Racing

This State Fair tradition starts at twilight. Once the horse and buggy races are over, stick around for a grandstand performance by the Bellamy Brothers on Monday and The Marshall Tucker Band on Wednesday

3. Ben-Ellen Donuts

These delicious melt-in-your-mouth cinnamon-sugar donuts have been a State Fair favorite for more than 60 years, and the fair is the only time of year for fans to get them!

4. Buttered Roasted Corn

It’s roasted corn, dripping with butter. It’s GOOD.

5. Potato Head Contest

Open to ages 5-8 and 9-12, the potato head contest is a seriously silly competition where competitors have to make a potato look like a person.

6. Moo U & The Dairy Birthing Center

The Moo U is an interactive livestock tour where visitors of all ages can learn more about their favorite animals including goats, cows, chickens, lambs and pigs. The very popular Dairy Birthing Center has more than 20 births each year, and gives fairgoers the chance to witness it live.

7. Great Musical Acts

See some of the best names in country music.

8. Arts and Crafts

The arts and craft show features fun competitions, different events and junior art showings. You’ll see hand crafted woodworks, fine art and beautiful Appalachian traditional crafts.

9. Flower Show

For a chance to see the best blooms in the state, don’t miss the amateur flower show competitions. Try to identify flowers by their looks and aroma at the Kids Mystery Flower Show, and find gardens planted in unique arrangements. Browse the beautiful cacti, intricate bonsai trees and more petals, vegetables and plants.

10. Horse Show

There is a full schedule of horse competitions and events at this year’s State Fair. You’ll see the draft horses, buggy racing, Clydesdales and more.

11. New Fair Food Contest
