Our Local Palate, Fayetteville, WV | A secret small-town foodie spot

by Angela Sundstrom

Fayetteville is known for adventure. But even the most thrilling day is not complete without it culminating over fantastic food.

For a town just shy of 3,000 people, our town packs one serious culinary punch. The Local Palate captured this spirit in a charming video:

Vandal’s Kitchen aims to be Fayetteville’s fast food alternative. This newcomer has gained popularity for its cozy atmosphere and fresh, locally sourced ingredients. If short on time, skip McDonald’s and opt for a Blueberry Corn Muffin or Kale, Avocado and Fried Egg Breakfast Sandwich.

SSSSince guests are lined out the door most weekends, it is now almost cliché to say the Secret Sandwich Society is anything but secret. And there is a reason they wait: the food is that good! They craft a menu of sandwiches, salads, burgers and desserts with flavor combinations that will blow your mind. Don’t miss out on “Mac N’ Cheese Monday.”

We can’t discuss Fayetteville cuisine without mentioning Mackie’s Biergarten, though it is technically outside of city limits, just across the New River Gorge Bridge. Mackie’s serves up tasty sliders like Pulled Pork, Korean BBQ, Curry Chicken Salad and Tofu, but, most importantly, they have Loaded Tater Tots. That’s tater tots smothered in cheese sauce, chili sauce and green onions. I never realized these high school lunch regulars were missing from my life, and I have no intention of letting them go again.

There’s only so much material you can squeeze into a 4-minute video, but there are plenty more delicious spots around town. A few more must-tastes:

  • Taste authentic Thai cuisine at Country Thai Restaurant, something you don’t often find in the West Virginia mountains.
  • Hop on over to Chetty’s Pub for dinner with a view that is nothing short of breathtaking.

Dining in Fayetteville is all about the experience. Shoot the breeze with your server or ask the person sitting next to you what adventures they conjured up that day. Bonding with one another over a fantastic meal is a simple pleasure this community treasures.

One final piece of advice: try a beer from Bridge Brew Works. They are brewed in Fayetteville and available at nearly every local restaurant. You won’t regret it.
